Kseniya Makarova

Coffee, Community, & Califlora

This installation celebrates the vibrant diversity of the neighborhood through a lively representation of local native plants, shown intermingling with coffee shop tools. The Excelsior is a wonderful place to grow and bloom, and Cumaica provides the fuel and the space for conversations, connections, and other key seeds of life for the community.

Kseniya's art often features plants and nature to showcase the beauty of a close-knit ecosystem—much like all things are connected in the wild, we as people affect each other and thrive when we work together. The featured flowers are all great candidates for an Excelsior garden—native plants are a wonderful way to contribute to habitat restoration, help out bees and other pollinators, and honor the heritage of the land we live on. In order of appearance: Epilobium canum (California Fuchsia), Diplacus aurantiacus (Monkey-flower), Calystegia purpurata, Fremontodendron californicum (Flannel bush), Collinsia heterophylla, and Clarkia rubicunda.
