Mary Graham (she/her), a visual artist and singer, moved to San Francisco in 2018 to attend California College of the Arts. Her art is influenced by community and human origins, and integrates ancestral narratives. Growing up in an artistic family, Mary was immersed in art-making from an early age. Her father, an artist in San Francisco during the 1980s, connected her to a supportive arts community in the Bay Area.
Mary has found the Bay to be an ideal place for her development as an emerging artist, describing the arts community as generous and uplifting. A multidisciplinary artist, she masterfully paints, draws portraits, sculpts from papier-mâché, and film. She is also a gifted singer, focused on bringing sonic healing and inspiration to Bay Area residents through neighborhood-specific serenades.
Mary views art as a constant in her life, with each day dedicated to creating and ideating, leading to the emergence of a comprehensive body of work. Reflecting on her creative practice, she explains: “My interest as an artist primarily lies in fostering a level of introspection and understanding between people by evoking some of our shared histories. I attempt this primarily through portraiture, but I’ve done this also through installation, film, and performance.”
Experience Mary Graham’s art at her show, “BLK HUES,” that opened on February 22nd at Senator Scott Weiner’s office in celebration of Black History Month.
