Yarrow Slaps is a San Francisco-born and based artist raised on the Bay Area’s multicultural politics, aesthetics, and practices. Operating at various D.I.Y. in intersections, Yarrow brings an artistic, curatorial, and entrepreneurial approach to his multimedia projects and figurative-based narratives. With an immense knowledge of art history and of the art world Yarrow’s usage of the outsider art style with his figures, break the expectations of the “Contemporary Art World.”
His paintings address America’s history and present issues of racism. Studying the current cultural climate and finding ways to merge with historical narratives, Yarrow brings an intersectional reckoning of the contemporary woven into the ancient.
He is actively crossing boundaries of conventional ways of showing artwork in a gallery with unique, immersive installations. His newest endeavor involves making art-inspired affordable clothing under the moniker "Yucci'' and has a storefront, Yucci Outlet in the Lower Haight.
Yarrow's process usually begins with an idea, researching and expanding it to make sure that it is "the idea" he would like to explore. After this due diligence, “I begin the translation of it from the mental to the physical world.”
To Yarrow, “The bay area is a chill, laid back, open minded, hectic, beautifully hilly place. I am from SF, and I'd say the bay area challenges me to be my best and provides me with many angles to view life.”
Besides making art, music and clothing Yarrow is the co-director and curator at Swim Gallery, working and connecting with hidden, emerging, and overlooked communities of artists and other creatives who question and challenge the traditional institutions and relationships of the contemporary art world. Yarrow has had solo exhibitions at De Young Museum.
Look out for his work on his instagram and his upcoming film with filmmaker Ralph Blair, called “Lyfe in a Strange Land”, scenes based on his dreamscapes and about an artist during strange times.
