Anna Mathai is a mixed media artist that plays with textures and unconventional materials like plaster and wire. Her backstory leads her inspired practice while coming to terms with immigration, colorism, and sexism.
Her relationship to the Bay Area may be fresh but that does not discount her connection to this beautiful region. Mathai finds motivation through our closeness with nature and our open-mindedness, “Moving here really enabled me to better voice my experiences and observations of what it means to be a woman, and a minority woman in today’s society.”
Her work can be light and void of color as well as explosive and saturated with hues. Mathai also teeter-totters on impulsive mark making to initiate a piece but can also plan out a work if creating a large, sculptural piece.
Mathai is embarking on expanding her work to home goods and even an interior design project installing plaster in Seattle.
