Bao-Khang Luu is a mixed-media artist working out of his apartment in San Francisco. Luu remarks on his first year in the city, “I’ve started two series in San Francisco thus far… Connecting with local gallerists and artists has directly influenced how I approach my color palette, material choices, process, and art practice in general.”

Luu’s practice pursues thoughtful control amidst visuals harking to more liberal gestures. He comments on how his work is layered, “Aesthetics are paramount, so my work is not overtly moralizing or political. That’s only on the surface. My work definitely comes with specific messaging.” When gathering inspiration, Luu visits a place and collects the memory of that moment, and collects materials in his vicinity. He refines ideas in a sketchbook, drafting out his thought process, “One-off sketches seldom translate directly to a piece. It requires multiple rounds of sketches and prototypes to refine a visual approach. I think about semiotics throughout the creative process, sometimes long after a piece is physically finished.”

We asked Luu: What does Pride mean to you?

“Pride is being able to live authentically as your whole self without shame, fear, or regret.”

Considering his future, Luu is excited to announce, “I’m expecting my first child this month (June 2022). I have no idea how my artistic perspective will evolve, but I’ve already started thinking about new series which are unlike any I have considered in the past.”
