Robin Varguez (they/them) is inspired by San Francisco’s history of social progression and how it relates to their own story. Their Mayan descent commingles with their connection to California, synthesizing their own unique palette and approach to mystical subject matter.
Varguez explains their work further, “My work…is passionate. It straddles magical realism, surrealism, and everyday life. The subjects include interpretations of queers, feminists, old retablos, fantasy creatures, and playful takes on Catholic and queer iconography.” As a self-taught artist, Varguez uses their art as a way to communicate, “Every longing, sadness, triumph, and joy is in some way translated into these scenes and creatures.”
We asked Varguez: What does Pride mean to you?
“Pride is feeling free and safe, being as queer as you are without feeling judged or afraid. I moved to this country from my hometown of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, at 19 years old, mainly because I felt I was gay (the only word I knew at the time), and I knew I couldn’t be. I remember going to my first Gay Pride in Long Beach, CA, and feeling like my heart was going to explode from happiness. Feeling validated, loved, safe & seen was such a powerful experience that I haven’t left.”
Varguez worked at Mission Bowling Club from June 6-September 6, 2022. Make sure to follow them for updates about their upcoming exhibition at Queer A.F.!
