Gene Dominique aims to capture drama-filled imagery that provides space for contemplation, especially now that we are endlessly inundated with a myriad of visuals. With a background in expert printing and an understanding, that time and light are the foundation of photography, Gene starts with an inquiry to initiate his practice.
“My style varies depending upon what interests me at the time. The elements I try to carry over from one type of imagery to another are: drama, color, story and wit.” Gene utilizes inspiration from wherever he encounters it. The solitary time spent in the darkroom harks back to the day-long travels experienced during the Great Migration. “I have always found solitude comforting and inspiring, and that's a good thing since working alone, whether in the studio or out on location, is essential in my practice.” Gene is most proud of his recent photo-doc series: “Still Here - African American Farmers in the 21st Century” - click our link in bio to see the whole collection.
In 2022, Gene had work installed in “The Night Is Young” show at Oakland Photo Workshop and “In My Backyard” show at GearBox Gallery.
