Marissa Arterberry is proud of her deep roots in The Bay Area, a major influence in her work. “San Francisco has a special place in my heart, it’s where my parents grew up, and my great-grandparents had a home in the Fillmore/Western Addition and were very active in the Black community there.”

Marissa describes her art as “magical watercolor cutouts” and imbues it with “elements of nature and African diasporic spirituality.” Working from dreams and visions, Marissa is also creatively motivated by dance. She sketches out ideas and jots down words and phrases pertaining to the subject matter. Marissa then transfers her sketch to watercolor paper, adds in paint, and cuts out the piece.

Marissa is currently hard at work on images for a deck of oracle cards, and she recently created the image for the Nine of Cups tarot card in a collaborative deck called “Tarot in Pandemic and Revolution” published by Nomadic Press. Her card contribution will be on display along with many others at CASTSF, 447 Minna, opening March 2023.
