Meet Jasper Wilde (they/them, an abstract painter living in San Francisco, born in San Jose, CA. A self-taught artist, they began to make art consistently in March of 2020 to cope with the global panic due to COVID-19 and to deal with the relational, financial, and social upheaval in their personal life.

They use paint, colors, and layering to heal their psychic being by giving themselves the freedom to gesturally express universal human experiences such as heartbreak, betrayal, depression, isolation, and the ecstasy of new love and life’s seasons.

When viewers encounter their work, they might be struck with waves of emotion that feel intensely personal, only to realize these feelings are reflected back at them. Using vibrant and bold colors with textural details on canvas and paper, Jasper produces work that explores what it means to be a trans person in late-stage capitalism while working in the service industry, as well as the emotions surrounding relationship betrayal and the challenging path forward after such a break.

Jasper’s studio, a modest yet intensely personal space in the Inner Richmond, serves as a sanctuary where they channel their experiences into their art. In this 10' x 10' room, filled with canvases and the scent of acrylic paint, Jasper confronts the societal norms and expectations that weigh heavily upon them. Their work is a vibrant act of defiance, a bold declaration of existence, and an ode to the resilience of the trans and nonbinary community—a community that Jasper is a proud part of. Through their art, Jasper not only maps out their own journey of self-discovery and acceptance but also carves out a space where others might find solace and recognition.
