Artist, Artistic Director and founder of The Black Woman Is God (TBWIG), Karen Seneferu is making a profound impact on the community. TBWIG has become “a staple to the Bay Area art culture scene since 2013 and continues to invite the whole Black community specifically and others in general to enjoy the unlimited possibilities of Black women's creatives.”

Seneferu is a self-taught, multi-media artist whose work revolves around beauty and African culture. “Despite what I create, I want beauty to resist annihilation. Often, public and private domains construct trauma that distorts the Black body. I want to challenge dehumanizing depictions by rooting my work in the African aesthetics.”

In her creative process, Seneferu also engages her family and community into the exhibition. "This inclusion is important, for the exhibition space is designed to separate the community apart from the individual whereas I try to gather parts of myself, my family, and my community into the work to not only celebrate beauty produced but how production can not exist without them.”

TBWIG will be open until February 6th at SOMArts Cultural Center, but there is still more in store for 2022. TBWIG will be integrated into a lecture entitled "Black Women in the Black Power Movement'' at San Francisco State University, which discusses the instrumental roles of Black women in the Black Power Movement and in organizations.
