Meehaun Glasper-Wade is an abstract artist that plays with the duality of “structure and looseness” in his wildly organic compositions. Meehaun recognizes the Bay Area as his place of upbringing by finding his communities and being able to transform into who he has always been on the inside.

Meehuan explains how he started his creative journey, “My art helps me to process my social anxiety. The style of drawing I use now started on my daily commutes to work, where I would have the worst public transportation anxiety. I kept a sketch book for those times and it would just calm me knowing I had this cool little doodle to look at by the end of each trip.”

Each piece starts without a sketch or preliminary mapping of the end product. Meehuan enjoys the discovery and impromptu-ness that unfolds as he layers graphite, ink and marker on the plane. “I like to let me surprise me,” Meehaun writes. His patterned drawings incorporate a mix of mark-making tools that allow him to explore all visual options.

Just yesterday, Meehaun was a panelist for: Inhabiting Joy: A Conversation on LGBTQ+ Creativity and Resilience, a discussion held by a diverse group of Bay Area based creators. This online event covered the topic of joy within the LGBTQ+ community and how creativity facilitates the necessary emotion of jubilation.

“Pride to me means loving myself in full. It means loving and accepting versions of myself that got me to where I am today - holding and embracing my feminine and masculine energies simultaneously.”
