Ron Moultrie Saunders creates photograms–photographs made without the use of a camera. He places material on the surface of silver-based photographic paper to make black and white prints. The paper is exposed to light emitted from an enlarger to create a shadowy silhouette image.

“I began creating photos using the photogram technique when my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer,” says Saunders.

“The photographic process has an immediacy, rawness, and truth that is more primal than images created with a camera, whether film or digital.” Lately, he’s been inspired by his bi-weekly flower buying trips. Saunders experiments with his iPhone 11 to capture photos similar to his photograms.

“I was looking for beauty in the midst of the chaos surrounding me, so I began to look at how the light was being transmitted through flower petals.”
