Introducing Tsungwei Moo, an artist whose diverse practice encompasses mixed media painting, printmaking, and ceramic sculpture. With a strong focus on social justice, nature, conservation, and public engagement, Moo draws inspiration from the vibrant diversity, culture of San Francisco, her adopted home since leaving Taiwan.

Moo’s artistic practice uses varied mediums and her love for nature, people and flowers comes through in her paintings and mixed media work- oftentimes using and recycling objects and incorporating them into the canvas-making process.

“I developed the concept idea first, then selected the medium to imbue with meaningful objects. I use recycled wood and natural materials to make art and give them a second chance to live inside my art. “

Originally studying Mass Communication in Taiwan, Moo embarked on a new path after relocating to San Francisco in 2003. She left her career in advertising, dedicating herself to her passion for fine art, further enriching her education and refining her skills.

At the SFPL her project Mothers and Daughters, paintings of generations of female immigrants highlight the experiences of female immigrants from various parts of the world, such as Canada, China, Haiti, India, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and Taiwan.

In 2019, Tsungwei Moo's remarkable artistic talent led her to win the United Airlines "Her Art Here" contest. As a result, her artwork now graces the exterior of a Boeing 757 aircraft, serving as a magnificent tribute to her cherished city of San Francisco. Capturing the palm trees and cityscapes. The scale of this achievement is awe-inspiring, with the artwork being 3600 times larger than an 18 x 24-inch canvas.

Moo's captivating works have graced numerous public locations, museums, galleries, and airports, including DeYoung Museum, SF MUNI buses, SFO Airport, LAX Airport, and Taiwan Art Bank.  Today's story features more of Tsungwei Moo's creations.

As we bid farewell to May, we express our gratitude to Jun Yang, the curator who has introduced us to the last three featured artists for AAPI Cultural Month in the Bay Area. Thank you, Jun!
