Zoe Ani is a mixed media artist working primarily with watercolor and encaustic. Ani’s inspiration comes from the various places she has inhabited including New York, Oregon, and Hawaii. Land and water are the most prominent subject matters in her practice which connect her indigenous roots with the Siletz Tribe, Grande Ronde, and Klamath.
Ani carves out space for artful meditation in our data-burdened reality, “The world moves way too fast most days and the information we are daily inundated with can be overwhelming. I try to bring about a space for reflection and pause to connect to myself and to others with my work.” Each piece comes with its own attached story and Ani hopes the viewers can bring their own tale that resonates with the art.
Ani has several collaborations in the works centered around our relationship with the land from our eternal agricultural attachment to intercontinental friendships hindered by distance but creatively fueled by parallel urban iconographies.
Ani reveres all the amazing queer folx that came before her from Marsha P. Johnson to her own grandmother as pioneers that led the way. She has the courage to “fully embrace who I am, a queer Indian & Hawaiian. My existence is resistance and I am proud to be in the company of this resilience.”
