Alma Leppla works with painting, drawing, and installation to elaborate her focus on “code switching and co-construction of identity based on perception.” This month marks her 10 years as a Bay Area resident fleeing from Florida as an escape from conservative ties. They have established their freedom of queerness and revels in the practice of “art-making as an opportunity to build community through the exploration of intersectional identities.”
Leppla is an educator and storyteller who “creates work that shares pieces of [their] story while allowing space for others to see themselves in the work too.” As of late, they has involved their own body as a centerpiece to managing an ongoing conversation through abstraction and figurative techniques. “I am curious about the ways certain marks communicate feelings, emotions, or ideas. I experiment with a variety of materials (natural dyes, charcoal, oil sticks, found wood) to get a sense for how they might construct a narrative.” Leppla’s accessible illustrations and style bolster their emphasis on narration and education.
Leppla will have a piece, Figure Studies (Cuello de Guyaba), up for auction in the upcoming Coalition on Homelessness - ArtAuction21.
