Makiko Harris is an abstract artist working with a mixture of media to encapsulate “dynamic juxtapositions of her multiracial experience.” Harris plays with texture and collage to create spatial tension and elaborate on diametrically opposing styles like “subtlety and exuberance, composure and expressiveness, the organic and geometric.”
Harris’ bodily energy is showcased by heavy manipulation, scraping, flooding, and impaction of the canvas. “I use this process to reflect on the resilience of the body, specifically through the lens of my background in feminist philosophy.” Harris is also an avid violinist and allows her musical background to denote her abstract language. She does not envision a final product; she allows intuition to take control while holding some semblance of structure through a planned process of how she creates the composition.
Harris has work currently up at Secession Art & Design for a 2-artist show until September 26. She is embarking on a new partnership with Liz Lidgett Gallery, will have her work featured in San Francisco Symphony’s 2021-2022 season campaign, and she will be starting her master's in Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art in London this September.
