Gerard Buulong harks to the masters and current events in his hybrid practice using photography and paint. His technique of reconstructing photographs by applying new layers of dimension heightens the composition and creates a brand new image.

Gerard has been an artist in San Francisco since the early 90s and finds freedom in our liberal society. When initiating a new work Gerard “starts with the idea he wants to explore and then chooses a photo (or sometimes two) that allows him to convey this idea. He then applies pastel to reshape contours and change or add colors. Finally, he uses acrylic – mostly in the form of dots – to add a third dimension and texture to the painting.” And yes, he does take many breaks when adding so many single dots onto one painting.
